Sorry for the extended break in posting! Making the swap from a desktop PC to using a netbook is going to take a bit of getting used to, but as my my PC had a little visit from Mr.Virus, it’s kind of necessary. I never had any virus trouble until I swapped to AVG yet within days of changing, I have ramnit.a rampaging through all my dll’s, html’s and exe’s. Go figure. It’s taking a while to get all the data and apps cleaned up, recovered and transferred over but I doubt I’ll be going to back to using a desktop full time, especially as I can now access the web on the move. So, things will be getting back to normal here shortly with the bonus of maybe having a few posts from shows etc whilst in attendance and even whilst overseas. So,with no thanks to AVG (which which appear to be useless), it’s on with the show. In celebration, here’s a random picture of a rusty Datsun…
Update: It seems the Internet has managed to spread the word so fast that the 411 became a little to hot to handle, with the result that rather than it heading for the banger track as was intended, the thieving scumbag that lifted it saw fit to dump it last night, thankfully with minimal damage. Although the identity of the thief is known, it’s unlikely the Police will act. What’s more the owner had to pay the Police £190 in towing fees to get his car back. Good to see the law looking after the victims of crime and dishing out justice, eh?
A friends unique Datsun P411 Bluebird was stolen this afternoon from the Arundel area down in Sussex. It’s missing it’s radiator so it’s not drivable for far. It was most likely lifted with a truck. The chances are it’s headed for export or for the oval so keep ‘em peeled folks. If anyone sees it send me a message. It’s also wearing a set of slot mags and the registration NAB 850D rather than the one shown in the pics.
Another pic after the jump…
I’ve spent the last two days sat staring at this screen, supping coffee and eating junk whilst I fumble my way through computer geek stuff, which I really don’t entirely understand. The upshot if this is the site now has a new look and slightly better functionality I hope. I was having problems before with image and text alignment, the collapsing menus, as well as a few other minor niggles but a change to a new customizable theme has now changed all that. The new theme is good and pretty flexible, but still didn’t look how I wanted nor did it display posts exactly as I’d like, so I had to delve into CSS, PHP, OMG and WTF to figure out how to make it do what I wanted. I guess I must be learning some of that geek stuff as it’s getting easier to figure out what I need to do as time goes on. I’m not sure whether this is a good thing or bad. Anyways, hope the site look right and works okay for you. It’s been a long two days of dullness.
Well, it’s been a little over a month since I’ve posted anything new, but what better way to re-commence proceedings than with a birthday announcement …Ratdat.com is now ten years old! Whilst the blog format hasn’t been going for that long …since November 2007 to be precise …the domain was first registered on May 2nd 2000 and a website created shortly after on the meagre 2Mb of webspace provided by my ISP at the time. It moved to whatever free webspace I could get for the first year before finding a permanent home with it’s current host and gradually grew from there. The site is now around 650Mb and hosts over 9000 images… a long way from where it started out!
When I decided to go to blog format in 2007, all the old stuff from the website was dropped for the sake of expediency, but I’ve recently started putting it all back in place bit by bit, so for those who have only seen the site since it’s been a blog, check out the archives shown prior to 2007. I’ll be filling in some more of the sites past over the next few months and will provide links to the ‘new’ archive material each time I do.
It’s time to make a few changes to the place. The site now displays in a wider format better suited to 1024 x 768 as I figured there can’t be many people still peering at low res 800 x 600 screens. The new layout with three columns rather than two, gives a little more room to add other stuff. No idea what… but I’ll think of something. You’ll also notice the shiny new collapsible menus for Categories and Archives over on the right. I’m still tweaking this but it’ll hopefully make old posts more accessible than before. A lot of the info that was posted up in a selection of pages before has been converted back to posts recently to tidy up the pages menu. Most of this is Datsun tech stuff and data. So it can still be easily found the old pages are now tagged and can be pulled up using the Datsun pages link on the top left. That page is temporary at the moment but will be replaced with a more comprehensive index shortly. Also you can now click on the header at the top of the page to return to the main page. Work is ongoing so expect a few glitches in the next few days while I fumble around with stuff I don’t really understand.
Things have probably looking a bit shaky on here for the last couple of days but thankfully it’s all fixed now (hopefully!). I’ve moved the site to a better server so I can post of lots more stuff but I’m not what you might call “tech savvy” so I’ve been fumbling my way around MySQL and php for that last couple of evenings trying to get it to work. Amazingly it’s looking like it’s all functioning again!
And so begins 2009. Any resolutions for the New Year? For me, not taking any extended breaks from posting on here for a start! On the agenda for 2009… finish the rebuild of my Violet SSS and Sunny truck for the summer and get my Civic back on the road. Also make a start on restoring my Datsun 1000 Estate and 510 before the end of the year. And finally the big task for the summer, sorting out a nice garage to put my cars in! Plenty to do so plenty to write about!
As it’s nearly Christmas day so I just like to wish you all…
What can I say… I had a long holiday? I’d be lying. Truth is I took too long a break from posting and just got out of the habit but I now repent! I shall mend my ways and get back to work on this site! Lots has happened in the last four months so I kind of have a lot to write about. What initially took me away from the Internet was working on my yard. My yard has been a muddy mess every winter and this year I was determined it wasn’t going to be, so I borrowed some plant equipment and set about shifting several tonnes of earth, moving fences, laying concrete and road planings to provide a better parking surface. After lots of hours each day I honestly couldn’t be bothered to sit and write stuff for this site and so slowly I let it slide into it’s current neglected state. But I’m back and there’s changes a-coming…
It seems that the latest security update may have unfortunately affected some user accounts. If anyone is having a problem logging to make comments in then get in touch and I’ll reset your password manually for you.
